The Highway of Heroes

Light a Candle For Peace

Math: We have been doing some math talks as well as our pumpkin investigation booklets.  Students make predictions and worked on measurement activities.  To wrap up the week long activity, we estimated how many pumpkin seeds were in the pumpkin.  We made a plan after reading the book "How Many Pumpkin Seeds". We decided to count our seeds by 10s.  We ended up having 413 seeds in our pumpkin!!

Science: We did an exciting activity on Friday while in the Rotunda.  Students in grade 3 have been exploring Forces.  We ended up conducting an experiment on elastic force.  Students identified that the force that elastics use was a pushing force.  They had to complete the sentence "If I place elastics around the center of the pumpkin then...."  Students had a turn and talk discussion.  They came up with the hypothesis that the pushing force of the elastics will cause the pumpkin to Pop!!

After placing 136 elastics around the pumpkin the pumpkin indeed POPPED!!!  The class was ecstatic!!!  Many students and staff who passed by were very curious as to what was going to happen to the pumpkin.

Language: This week we started descriptive writing.  Students are using their 5 senses to make their writing more interesting.  For example, instead of saying I see the tree, students would ad adjectives to describe the tree.  I see the bright orange and yellow leaves on the tree. It looks like it is on fire!!
We read the book "Fletcher and The Falling Leaves" to inspire our 5 senses writing.

Students have been writing about the 5 Senses of Fall. We will start next week describing monsters in our writing, and create Lost Monster posters!

Have your child verbally tell you descriptions of objects in their environment using their 5 senses (taste, touch, smell, hear, and see).  Be sure they use descriptive words and not just say I taste an apple.  Have them pretend you don't know what it tastes like (or whatever sense you are focusing on) and have them tell you.  The apple tastes juicy and sweet.

Review concept of descriptive writing with this video:  (We watched this video in class)

Art: With Halloween approaching we words on symmetry and line work to decorate sugar skulls (The Day of The Dead).   Students were given a blank skull and had to design it ensuring it was symmetrical and focused on different lines.

This week we read and discussed the following books:

Please take the time to discuss books with your child.

Week #7

Class Reminders:

*** Please take the time to review with your child about classroom expectations.  We have been having some issues, especially this week, regarding listening and working silently. Many students have needed reminders about classroom expectations.  We would like to try to keep to keep our classroom environment one that is calm and one where people can be happy and able to learn.   I would greatly appreciate your help me with this matter.

Monday Oct 22- Adventure Logs due

Tuesday Oct 23- Library. Please bring library books to be exchanged.

Tuesday Oct 23- ORANGE SHIRT DAY - Please feel free to wear an orange shirt

What is Orange Shirt Day?  Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013.  It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.

The program aims to help children practice and improve their reading skills! Children will receive individualized reading help and encouragement (30-minute session per child). Ages 6-12.

For more information please visit: https://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en/event/reading-buddies-copains-de-lecture-12

Get Epic: The at home version is a free trial.  Students can access the books free during school hours.  If your child is home sick or has appointments during the day, please feel free to use the website or app during school hours.

What we did this week:

Math:  We completed our unit on patterning.  We have a patterning test today (Friday).  Some students needed more time and will be completing their tests on Monday.

We will be moving on to Number Sense and Numeration, but first, we will be focusing on Halloween related math activities that focus on estimation and measurement. Students will be completing a math investigation regarding a pumpkin!

Science: Our class completed a few experiments. The grade 2s looked at liquids and which liquids flowed more quickly and why.  We also examined mixtures and which solids and liquids can mix or not mix with water.  The grade 3s examined magnets.  They looked at what items were able to be attracted to a magnet.

Language: We have been working on completing our  "Ouch stories".  In addition, we started literacy centers.  Students rotated through 4 stations (work with the teacher, working with words, reading with technology, and working on writing).   This week we will begin descriptive writing based around fall and Halloween!!

Health: Continued to look at the 4 food groups.

Music: We have started music this week.  We are going to be working on 2 songs for the Remembrance Day Assembly which I will be planning.  Please feel free to play these songs and practice the lyrics.
