Voting took place during Parent-teacher conference times.

We will be starting our Annual Food drive this week.  If you choose to participate, please bring in any non-perishable food items (eg. canned veggies; jar of sauce; spaghetti; box of cereal; etc...). We will be collecting donations until mid-December. Usually, there is a class challenge. The classes that bring in the most from each division, wins a prize.

CURRICULUM:

Math: We have been working on solving word problems this past week.

We came up with How to Solve a Word Problem sequence.  Love how the students have various strategies to solve the same problem!!

This week we worked on 2 word problems:

Ms. Hamilton’s class loved to play dodgeball during gym. Ms. Hamilton’s class had 18 students. There were 11 girls and 7 boys in her class.  In the dodgeball game there were blue and green balls. There were 15 blue balls. The green balls had 5 more than the blue balls.  How many dodgeballs were there altogether?

James loves flags.  He loves to point them out when he spots them, as he is driving somewhere in the car. He loves playing with them and swishing them around.  He also loves collecting them. He has about 25 Canada flags. He also has 12 fewer flags that are not Canadian flags. How many flags does James have all together?

We also played a few place value games (Race to 100 and Place Value War).  These are games you can play at home.  All you need is a place value mat like below, a deck of cards, a number cube/dice, as well as a print out of base ten blocks.  Please note: You can use objects around the house for base-ten blocks. For example:

Ones: Cereal pieces; paper clips; candy; dried beans or corn;  etc...

Tens: popsicle sticks; toothpicks; crayons; etc...

Or google: Base ten block templates

Language:  We started our letter writing unit.  Students started by brainstorming items we get in the mail.  Later we discussed reasons to write letters.  Finally, we looked at parts of a friendly letter.Image result for parts of a friendly letterImage result for parts of a friendly letter
