What did we do this week?

Math: Because it was Halloween this week, we did some Halloween themed math activities. Students went home this week with a math and literacy package.  They can work on it at home for practice.

We looked at word problems this week. Specifically, 2 part math problems.  Students were asked to read the question.  Take our the information that was not important.  Figure out what is important. Answer what is the question asking me? Decided on a math strategy. Show me their work. Finally, answer the question using a sentence.

Here is an example of a math problem:

It was a nice day at the pond.  There were ducks floating, frogs hopping and fish swimming.   On one big brown log there were 12 green and speckled frogs. A second log had 7 frogs more than the first log.  How many frogs were there at the pond?

(Answer: 31)

Students would use the following template to answer the word problem question.

We started numeracy this week as well.  Students are representing numbers in various ways.  For example:

- how many ways can you show me 24? (they can use pictures, numbers, and words)

- Where would this number be on a number line

- Show me how to make _______ number using ten frame blocks.

Language:

We completed our 5 Sense of Fall descriptive writing.  Students are now working on a descriptive paragraph for a monster and creating a Lost Monster poster.

We also completed our Kindness Posters.  Mrs. Tsiolas' class voted on our posters to select the top 3 posters to go to the schoolwide contest. The classroom winners are Keira, Bayanne, and Jumana!  Congratulations girls!! The Kindness Committee will look at the entries from all of the classes in the school to determine the final winners.

Student posters were judged by their peers on the following criteria:

- Message related to kindness
- Effective use of colour and space
- Clarity (picture matches the message)
- Eye-catching

On Halloween, students from grades 1-3 were combined and put into groups.  They circulated to 4 different Halloween themed learning centers.  I hope they all had fun!!
