Thank you for visiting the blog on a weekly basis.
Math: We continued to work on place value. Please continue to work on place value activities with your child. This is a very important unit as the concepts will help with addition and subtraction. Please see last weeks blog (Week 10) for more information.
Place value games:
We also played a few place value games (Race to 100 and Place Value War). These are games you can play at home. All you need is a place value mat like below, a deck of cards (without the king, queen, jacks and 10s) or Uno cards, a number cube/dice, as well as a print out of base ten blocks. Please note: You can use objects around the house for base-ten blocks. For example:
Ones: Cereal pieces; paper clips; candy; dried beans or corn; etc...
Tens: popsicle sticks; toothpicks; crayons; etc...
Or google: Base ten block templates (like the one below)
Race to 100:
Child rolls 1 dice. The number they roll they add to the ones side. Once they reach 10 (or more) they trade in 10 ones for a 10 rod and add it to the 10s column. Continue play. Once they have 10 rods, they can trade it in for a 100. First person to make 100 wins!
Place Value War:
Please visit https://childhood101.com/maths-games-for-kids-place-value-war/ for instructions.
Social Studies: We had an OPEN BOOK test on the Wendat and the Anishinabe. We will start to discuss pioneers next week.
Art: We made poppy drawings. I think they turned out very well!! Such talent in the class!!
Health: We continued to learn about oral health. We also did an experiment with an egg and soda. The egg represented white teeth. We soaked it in soda for 24 hours to see what would happen. The students made a hypthesis (prediction)- They believed that the egg would turn brown. 24 hours later, we checked and their hypothesis was correct. We then took some toothpaste and brushed the egg (tooth) and noticed that the egg became more white again. Thus showing the importance of brushing our teeth!!
